2010 Edition
Final Steps of Conservation of Polychrome Art Works
Subject
Main topics: discussion on the meaning, limits, methods and materials used in the in-painting treatments of pictorial layers and in the final steps of restoration. Special attention will be paid to the connection of these treatments one to another and the interactions among the materials employed.
|
Historical and critical review on the general approach to the final steps of restoration: technical and aesthetical goals of the in-painting treatments; the role of these treatments considered in the whole process of restoration.
|
Experimentation and studies on new materials, in order to verify the best compatibility between them and the peculiar characteristics of each painting (a rule of the minimal intervention philosophy).
|
|
Link to Cesmar7 past Congresses, in particular to: • the 2006 and 2008 editions about materials used in consolidation (the measurement of forces in paint layers and in the materials for restoration); • the 2002 Conference, on the cleaning of pictorial surfaces (about varnishes).
Great attention will be paid to durability and removability of materials used in restoration (related to the cyclic nature of interventions on paintings.

Why this subject is important
Final steps take a lot of time (and money) in a restoration intervention, but they often degrades very quickly and a new intervention is required . Do they result too much expensive compared to the total costs of an intervention? In time of economic crisis, we think this is a current problem to think about.
Addressed to:
• All the professionals working with different competences in the conservation of paintings: restorers, conservators, art historians, scientists.
• Students and teachers, from vocational training up to university level.
